TIM JOHNSTON
Tim began his career in the early 90s as an in-house engineer at Australia’s iconic Metropolis Audio, working alongside some of Australia’s finest bands and producers. He went on to form his own business, “Seed” recording studios in 1995, followed by work in the UK for four years, honing the “British Band” sound. He has vast experience in large-scale studio facilities covering a diverse array of line-ups, and has worked across most of Melbourne’s premier studios. He now divides his time working in those spaces and in his own studio, Satellite Studios.
Tim’s list of credits includes Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, The Dandy Warhols, Stereophonics, Even, Missy Higgins, Courtney Barnett, The Waifs, The Badloves, Radio Birdman, Lisa Miller & Tex Perkins, Beasts of Bourbon, Dallas Crane, The Vaudeville Smash and the Paper Kites to name a few.
Tim specialises in indie rock and pop but has extensive experience across a wide range of genres and varying instrumentation, from solo artists through to orchestral line-ups. In addition to studio recordings, he is prolific in large-scale live multitrack captures for location recordings and mixes.
Capturing the warmth and vitality of live instrumentation, Tim uses traditional analogue equipment, 2 inch tape, valve microphones, preamps and compressors, and couples this with the use of production techniques offered within the digital domains such as Pro Tools. A musician and composer himself, he is happy to advise clients on arrangements and forms. He has a down-to-earth, easygoing manner, up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and a fastidious attention to detail.
In his spare time, Tim teaches emerging engineer-producers and plays with his young daughter.
